A History of CAOS
Chapeltown & District Amateur Operatic Society's (CAOS) first production was "Highwayman Love", staged at the Chapeltown picture palace in 1924.

The society continued producing musicals at The Picture Palace until 1931 when the advent of "talkies" made it necessary to move to a new location.  This was The Newton Memorial Hall, Chapeltown.  The first production at Newton Hall was "Floradora" held in February 1931.

The Newton Hall remained the society's home until 1978 when it was felt that better production and audience facilities were required.  The society decided to move to The Montgomery Theatre, located in the centre of Sheffield.  Their first production at their new home was "The King and I" in 1978.

Spiraling costs forced another venue change to the Rotherham Civic Theatre, for 1983’s production of “The Sound Of Music”.  This theatre is still the society’s home after over thirty years and many productions.

In 1995 CAOS had the honour of presenting the South Yorkshire Premiere of "Meet Me In St. Louis"  The local press reported this as "a resounding success".

Over the years the society has rehearsed in a variety of venues including, schools, church halls, libraries, adult training centres and even, of all places, public houses. As well as one major musical each year the society has also produced 'mini' shows in local halls and theatres to raise much needed cash to cover the ever-increasing cost of staging their main show.

In 2006 the society appointed the youngest chairman in its 82 year history.  Alongside a new production team the society started to move in a new, exciting direction.

In 2009 CAOS opened the doors to a new section of the society "CAOS ACADEMY"  Dedicated to producing the next generation of talent the Academy gives opportunities to local children aged between eight and sixteen.  The society is already reaping the benefit with three people making the transition from Academy to main society.
